The Breakdancing Baker
Whack Donuts began with a simple idea: create vegan donuts that people would genuinely crave while building a space where everyone feels welcome.
Before becoming a baker, founder Vandor "Whacko" Hill spent years immersed in the breaking and street dance community, where creativity, discipline, and community have always been at the heart of everything he does. Those same values became the foundation of Whack Donuts.
During the pandemic, Vandor began teaching himself how to bake from his San Francisco apartment. Through countless hours of trial and error, he developed recipes that challenged the idea of what a vegan donut could be—soft, flavorful, and made to be enjoyed by everyone, not just those following a plant-based diet.
As demand grew, Whack Donuts expanded from apartment baking to pop-ups at breweries, farmers markets, and community events, eventually earning recognition from local food writers and becoming available at beloved Bay Area businesses. That momentum led to a permanent home in San Francisco's Embarcadero through the Vacant to Vibrant program.
Today, Whack Donuts is more than a bakery. It's a reflection of the same culture that inspired it—a place where creativity, community, and connection come together over great food. Whether you're stopping in for your morning coffee, discovering a new seasonal flavor, or joining us at a community event, you're part of the story we're continuing to build, one donut at a time.
